Curly Sue, Is That You!?
My Go-To Perm Rod Tutorial
Here's what you'll need
PRODUCTS OPTIONAL
You do NOT need these particular products in order to achieve this look. However, these are the products I decided to use this go around. I ALWAYS switch it up, but I always use a leave-in and cream/lotion for moisture and gel/gelly for hold.
Inspire by Made Beautiful- Leave-in Conditioner, Milk Styling Lotion & Hydrating Gelly. Click link below to discover the full product line.
Products needed
You will NEED these particular items to achieve this look. The size of the rod is dependent on how big of a curl you are trying to achieve. Bigger rod, bigger curls. Smaller rod, smaller curls.
If you don't own a paddle brush, any other brush or comb will work; this is solely used to detangle the hair.
Perm Rods- These can be found at any local beauty supply store. However if for some reason you are unable to find them locally, click link below for online purchase.
The pROCESS
Hey loves! Sooooo I have been getting messages for months in regards to this hairstyle, so i finally decided to give the people what they wanttttt! This look is pretty simple, however if you all have any additional questions after reading/viewing feel free to shoot me a message via the 'Contact' tab above.
So first things first... you want to start on freshly washed & deep conditioned hair. I have a video on my YouTube Channel showing my Wash Day Routine (https://youtu.be/qdAeyEhLKWY) if you're interested. After, washing/deep conditioning you want to section off your hair and start detangling:
- for this step you will need the paddle brush and/or whatever item you have on hand to detangle your hair.
- it is also best to add your leave-in conditioner at this point; makes the detangling process 10x easier.
After detangling, you want to part your hair into smaller portions. As you'll see, I don't part/section my hair any special way, but if you like your parts to be precise feel free to part your hair accordingly. However, it is best to remember that the bigger the section, the longer it will take to dry. This is especially true if it takes a while for your hair to dry in general; therefore you may want to work in smaller sections and/or just prepare to sit under the dryer for a longer period of time.
As you'll see, I like to add the products to each separate section... I do this to ensure that each curl is properly moisturized and ensured to hold. However, you can choose to add each product to your whole head all at one time. However, I do prefer to add my products in a particular order; leave-in conditioner first to add the additional moisture you just rinsed out from your deep conditioner, next is your cream/lotion in order to lock in the moisture, and lastly is the gel/gelly to ensure that the curl holds up overtime.
After adding your products you can start adding your perm rods. NOW... pay close attention to how I apply the perm rods, you may have to re-watch a few times before you catch on. The best way to describe the application is "twist and wrap around." The twist is VERYYYY important... if you do not twist the hair, the curls will turn out more like a curl you would achieve if you used a flat iron, not as defined and full/thick looking.. hopefully that makes sense. Lol. I didn't show this in the clip.. however I added gel to the ends of my hair once I got to the end of the perm rod, just to make sure the hair stays in place during the drying process. See below to view my hair with all perm rods added; as well the drying process.
After adding all perm rods.
I personally use medium heat and low speed; however you can interchange between heat/speed throughout the process.
You can choose to air dry, but that type of drying process will take 10x's longer. Also, if you own a hooded dryer feel free to use that; however I do not own one thus I use my drier attachment. I set with the drier on my head for approximately 2 hours.
The Takedown
Taking down the hair is pretty easy, you just want to be careful because frizziness will occur. Also, it it good to use oils for the takedown process, just to add an extra shine to the hair and combat frizziness as well. However, I did not add any oil this go around so this step is optional.
After you have taken out all the perm rods, your should have voluminous bouncy curlssssss! Shake, Shake, Shake and Enjoyyyy. (See videos/pictures below of the finished product)
